Inflation accelerated to 1.7 per cent in May

The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland accelerated to 1.7 per cent in May. In April it was 1.3 per cent. Inflation was particularly quickened by higher prices of liquid fuels.

Consumer prices were pushed up most in the year by higher prices of housing: prices of dwellings rose, rents were increased and repair and maintenance charges went up. Risen prices of fuels had an almost equal impact on inflation. Consumer prices were also raised by higher prices of food and risen restaurant prices. Inflation was curbed by lower prices of telephone call charges and entertainment electronics and data processing equipment from the year before.

From April to May consumer prices rose by 0.1 per cent.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 55,000 prices on 497 commodities from approximately 3,500 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
