Inflation 1.3 per cent in April

The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.3 per cent in April. In March it was 0.9 per cent. Inflation was accelerated especially by higher prices of vegetables and slower fall in prices of telephone call charges from the previous year.

Consumer prices were pushed up most in the year by higher prices of liquid fuels. Risen prices of dwellings, increased rents and higher restaurant and hotel prices and risen public transport prices also had an impact on inflation. The rise of consumer prices was curbed by lower telephone call charges and fallen prices of entertainment electronics and data processing equipment from the year before.

From March to April, consumer prices rose by 0.5 per cent, which was principally due to higher prices of oil products.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 55,000 prices on 497 commodities from approximately 3,500 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
