Statistics Finland's updated strategy paves the way for the revision of data production

Statistics Finland has updated its strategy. The strategy was updated to enable as efficient a management of the organisation as possible in the changing operating environment. Statistics Finland's mission and vision remain unchanged in the update.

Statistics Finland collects and combines data produced in Finnish society into data resources and processes them into statistics and data for social discussion and for the benefit of customers. Despite its scarcer resources, Statistics Finland aims to be the best in the world at this task in future as well. This goal is pursued by continuing to strengthen and harmonise data production and by promoting the use of data in society.

Strengthening and harmonising the information process is the key strategy

The key strategy is to strengthen and harmonise the agency's information process and achieve savings in that way. It is a very ambitious objective. The aim is to rationalise repetitive work steps by 20 per cent. As the starting point is already fairly good, the achievement of the objective will require radical changes in the data processing process.

Strengthening the information process requires that the used technologies, operating modes and processes are revised. As a result of the change to be made in the coming years, all of Statistics Finland's information and service production will be based on common data resources, the building of which was already started a few years ago.

“It is not an easy path and there is also the possibility of failure involved in major changes. But I am certain this is worth doing because the other alternatives would be significantly worse,” says Director General Markus Sovala.

The second objective of the strategy is to promote society’s use of data produced by Statistics Finland as its basic task. Statistics Finland focuses on the tasks that are its strengths, such as producing reliable data for the use of decision-makers, researchers and citizens.

The Management Group updated Statistics Finland's strategy and strategic action programme during spring 2024. A comprehensive round of stakeholder discussions was organised as the basis for the strategy work. Statistics Finland's supervisors and experts also participated in the strategy discussions.
