Establishment of new enterprises continues to decline


According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 6.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2013 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings and closures was highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa. In the third quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise closures was 3.7 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of the year before. According to preliminary data for the whole year, the number of enterprise openings fell by four per cent in 2013.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,101 enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2013. Enterprise openings decreased by 6.7 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2012, when they numbered 6,539. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.8 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,053, or 17.3 per cent of all enterprise openings in the fourth quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise openings numbered 983 (16.1%) and in construction 773 (12.7%). The number of enterprise openings decreased most in professional, scientific and technical activities (-132) compared with the fourth quarter of 2012.

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the fourth quarter of 2013 in Uusimaa, where new enterprises totalled 2,344 and the next highest in Pirkanmaa (524) and Varsinais-Suomi (515). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa, 2.1 per cent. The numbers of enterprise openings were next highest in South Karelia (1.9%) and North Ostrobothnia (1.8%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2012, the number of enterprise openings increased most in South Karelia (36) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-134).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,225), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (417) and Turku (356). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Joensuu (24) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-99).

Examined by ELY Centre, in the fourth quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (2,344), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (524) and Varsinais-Suomi (515). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in the area of the ELY centre of Ostrobothnia (44) and decreased most in the area of the ELY centre of Uusimaa (-134).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2013 in Helsinki (1,201), followed by Espoo (362), Tampere (273), Vantaa (254) and Turku (225). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (29), Imatra (18) and Vaasa (17) and decreased most in Oulu (-61) and Porvoo (-31).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2013, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 2,819 and those of the form of limited company 2,767. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 46.2 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 45.4 per cent of all enterprise openings. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2012, the number of limited companies went down by 2.3 per cent and that of enterprises of the form of natural person decreased by 8.7 per cent.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,913 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2013. Compared to the third quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 3.7 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2012 they numbered 4,736. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2013.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 940, or 19.1 per cent of all enterprise closures in the third quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 758 (15.4%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 589 (12.0%). In the biggest industries, the number of enterprise closures increased most in manufacturing (24) and decreased most in construction (-36) compared to the third quarter of 2012.

Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the third quarter of 2013 in Uusimaa (1,696) and the next highest in Pirkanmaa (492) and Varsinais-Suomi (485). Relative to the enterprise stock, Kymenlaakso had the highest number of enterprise closures (1.8%). Compared to the third quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in Ostrobothnia (84) and decreased most in Satakunta (-22).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,571), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (382) and Turku (320). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (60) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Pori (-20).

Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2013 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (1,696), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (492). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in the area of the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (84) and decreased most in the area of the ELY centre of Satakunta (-22).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (736), followed by Espoo (244), Tampere (227) and Vantaa (203). Compared to the third quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in Kouvola (36), Vantaa (36) and Lahti (29) and decreased most in Jämsä (-15) and Porvoo (-15).

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2013, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,531 and those of the form of limited company 1,721. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 51.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 35.0 per cent of all enterprise closures. Compared to the third quarter of 2012, the number of limited companies went down by 3.7 per cent and that of enterprises of the form of natural person decreased by 3.6 per cent.
