More job vacancies in the third quarter than one year earlier

According to the Job Vacancy Survey of Statistics Finland there were 36,900 job vacancies in the third quarter of 2010, which was 19 per cent more than one year earlier (31,100). The measurement for the third quarter was taken on 1 September.

In the third quarter, 26,000, or 71 per cent, of the job vacancies were in private enterprises. Compared with the quarter one year ago, job vacancies increased throughout Western Finland, Southern Finland (excl. Uusimaa) and Northern Finland. Job vacancies decreased in Uusimaa.

By industry, job vacancies increased in professional, scientific and technical activities (2,500) trade (1,600), manufacturing (1,200), and financial, insurance and real estate activities (900). Job vacancies increased especially in local units with more than 100 employees. Job vacancies decreased in local units with 1 to 4 employees.

The relative share of fixed-term vacancies increased by 12 percentage points from one year ago. Employers had more recruitment problems than one year ago. The share of hard-to-fill vacancies of all job vacancies increased by 12 percentage points to 48 per cent.

Statistics Finland has been collecting data on job vacancies quarterly since the beginning of 2002. The statistics are based on a sample of establishments of enterprises and general government. The data are collected with telephone interviews and web questionnaires. The statistics are decreed by a regulation of the European Union. The objective is to produce up-to-date and comparable information about the number and structure of job openings on the labour markets of EU Member States.
