Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased in May to July

According to Statistics Finland's data, in May to July 2015 building permits were granted for a total of 7.9 million cubic metres, which is 12.2 per cent lower than one year ago. The share of residential buildings in the total was 2.5 million cubic metres. Measured by volume, the development was most favourable for building permits granted for residential blocks of flats, growing by 5.7 per cent. For other than residential building construction, most building permits were granted for public service buildings, up by 23.6 per cent from one year back.

Building permits granted for residential buildings decreased from last year

In May to July, building permits were granted for nearly 7,000 apartments, which is 5.3 per cent down from one year ago. Measured by volume, 13.1 per cent fewer building permits were granted for residential buildings than one year earlier.

The share of detached houses in the cubic volume of residential building has long been bigger than that of residential blocks of flats. Large block of flats projects granted in Greater Helsinki have kept the block of flats production stable. The long-term development has changed and the cubic metre volume granted for detached houses has fallen under the level of the block of flats production.

Total production of newbuilding decreased slightly in July

The constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production decreased in July by 3.7 per cent year-on-year. At the same time, the production of residential building went down by 5.2 per cent and other than residential building by 2.6 per cent. The production of transport buildings grew most, by 10.3 per cent from one year ago. The favourable development of transport buildings is based on the construction of several big parking garages at the same time.

Data of the statistics on building and dwelling production

The published data are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised. Due to the reviews of the Population Information System, the accrued data from one year back do not fully correspond to those of the present data and cause bias to the calculation of change percentages. The data still has undercoverage for the newest months and will be supplemented over coming months.
