Cubic volume covered by granted building permits declined in March to May

According to Statistics Finland, building permits were granted for a total of 12.2 million cubic metres in March to May 2017. The cubic volume of building permits granted was 2.7 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year previously. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings increased by 12.5 per cent. The cubic volume granted for blocks of flats projects in Greater Helsinki covered nearly 30 per cent of the total cubic metres of building permits for residential buildings in Finland. The cubic volume of building permits granted for commercial and office buildings continued to grow considerably during the period.

Building of blocks of flats continued growing

In March to May, building permits were granted for a total of 4.1 million cubic metres of residential buildings. Examined by building type, the growth in building permits granted for blocks of flats amounted to 38.6 per cent. Simultaneously, the cubic volume granted for terraced houses decreased by 25.3 per cent and that of detached houses by 12.2 per cent.

In March to May, building permits were granted for a total of 13,950 apartments, up by 26.8 per cent from the year before. The number of dwellings measured over a three month period is the highest during the history of the current statistics. Previously, the closest to this number was reached in summer 2005.

Volume of building production is growing steadily

In March to May, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 14.3 per cent year-on-year. The volume of construction of residential buildings increased in the period by 14.5 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 14.2 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 21.0 per cent more building projects and 28.0 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised.
