Finland's preliminary population figure 5,503,879 at the end of February

New releases will not be produced on preliminary population statistics any more in 2017. Revised figures concerning 2017 will be released at a later date to be announced separately.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,503,879 at the end of February. Our country's population increased by 582 persons during January-February. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 2 404. The number of births was 1 822 lower than that of deaths.

During January-February, 7,955 children were born, which is 520 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2016. The number of deaths was 9,777, which is 198 less than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary statistics for February, 4,743 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 2,339 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 520 higher and the number of emigrants 332 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 1,072 of the immigrants and 1,613 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 38,812 during January-February. Compared with the corresponding period in 2016, the increase was 1,651 migrations according to the municipal division of 2016.
