Age group of employment rate changes

Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey will start reporting the employment rate according to the 20 to 64 age group. Previously the employment rate has been examined in the 15 to 64 age group. The first data according to the new age group division will be published on 21 February 2023.

“In practice, one target age group must be selected for the employment rate, although data are available from several different age groups. The selection of persons aged 20 to 64 is supported by the fact that this age group is the primary age group on the labour market,” says Senior Statistician Pertti Taskinen of Statistics Finland.

The 20 to 64 age group is already commonly used in international employment rate measures and indicators.

“With this change we move towards the European practice, which improves the international comparability of data,” Taskinen says.

At first, the employment rates of persons aged 15 to 64 as well as persons aged 20 to 64 will be published in the monthly Labour Force Survey.

The employment rate can also in future be examined according to persons aged 15 to 64 in the StatFin database.
