The classification was made to classify accidental and violent deaths based on so-called external causes. The classification is available starting from the data for 1998.

The category ‘XX External causes of morbidity and mortality’ in the international ICD-10 classification (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problem, 10th Revision) are grouped into 122 categories. The ICD-10 codes belonging to the categories are mentioned in brackets after the categories.
