Retail trade sales grew by 1.8 per cent in April from one year ago

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales grew by 1.8 per cent in April from April 2012. The volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, went up by 0.3 per cent over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 0.9 per cent and in department store trade by 2.1 per cent year-on-year. Wholesale trade sales contracted by 0.5 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 11.6 per cent from one year ago. In total trade, sales contracted by 1.3 per cent in April.

In the January to April period, retail trade sales grew by 0.8 per cent compared with the respective period of the previous year. In contrast, wholesale trade sales went down by 2.7 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 30.5 per cent over the corresponding period. In total trade, sales were down by 6.0 per cent in January to April on the respective period of the year before.

Motor vehicle sales contracted most strongly in wholesale trade in January to March

Motor vehicle sales contracted by 35.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2013 from the respective period of one year previously. Motor vehicle sales fell most due to wholesale trade of motor vehicles, which went down by over 50 per cent from January to March 2012. In addition to domestic wholesale trade, wholesale of motor vehicles includes transit exports to neighbouring countries.

From January to March, sales contracted by 26.0 per cent in retail trade of motor vehicles and by 11.2 per cent in maintenance and repair from the corresponding period of the previous year. The strong growth in January to March 2012 prior to the amendment of the motor vehicle tax also has an effect on the development of motor vehicle sales in the first quarter.

Wholesale trade of motor vehicles accounted for 43 per cent of total motor vehicle sales. In contrast, retail trade of motor vehicles had a share of 45 per cent and the share of maintenance and repair was 12 per cent of total motor vehicle sales. The information on shares is based on the Business Register data for 2011.
