Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 17 per cent in February

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in February 2009 was 340,000, which was as much as 17 per cent less than in February 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists also fell by 7 per cent from last year. The total number of overnight stays decreased by 10 per cent from February 2008 and accommodation establishments recorded 1.3 million of them. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Overnight stays contracted strongly in February. The numbers of overnight stays in Finland of visitors from all the most important inbound tourism countries were significantly lower than in the year before. Visitors from the UK and Russia were the largest groups of foreign tourists in February, with 51,000 nights spent recorded for both. Nights spent by visitors from the UK fell by one-quarter and those spent by Russian tourists by 15 per cent. German, French and Swedish visitors came next. Their overnight stays decreased by between 10 and 13 per cent from last year. Nights spent by visitors from Norway and the USA decreased most, or by 28 and 31 per cent. Overnight stays by Italian and Spanish tourists fell by one-fifth from February 2008.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotel statistics.
