Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 11 per cent in June

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in June 2009 was 468,000, which was 11 per cent lower than in June 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists remained on level with the previous year at 1,550,000. The total number of overnight stays decreased by 3 per cent from the year before. Accommodation establishments recorded a total of 2 million of them in June 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments have been decreasing throughout the current year and the beginning of summer tourism followed a similar trend. Only overnight stays of Russian visitors increased from last year. They spent 69,000 nights in Finland, which was 12 per cent more than one year previously. By contrast, the numbers of overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for visitors from all other most important inbound tourism countries were considerably lower than one year earlier. Germans were the largest group of foreign visitors with nearly 71,000 nights spent. However, this was 15 per cent less than one year earlier. Overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for Swedish visitors totalled just under 57,000, which was 12 per cent less than one year before. Nights spent by visitors from Japan and the USA decreased most in June; by around one-quarter from last year. The number of nights spent by Estonian visitors also contracted strongly; by one-fifth from June 2008.
